Erskine Edges ASU, 7-5
Freshman catcher Justin Appel goes 3-for-5

BaseballAUGUSTA, Ga. - Erskine moved out to a 6-0 lead and posted a 7-5 non-conference victory over Augusta State Thursday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

With the victory, the Flying Fleet improved to 14-5 while the Jaguars dropped to 6-12 on the season.

ASU freshman catcher Justin Appel went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Senior shortstop Evan Smith and junior DH Kenny Smith each booked a pair of hits and drove in a run, along with sophomore Dwight Ashe.

Erskine’s Bryan Fogle jacked a two-run homer to deep centerfield off ASU starter Josh Barks (1-2) and went 3- for-5 with three RBI. Seven other players had one hit apiece for the Flying Fleet.

Russell Reid (4-2) struck out 11 and scattered 11 hits over 8.0 innings to earn the win. Atlee Pearson picked up his sixth save, yielding a run, a hit and a walk with three strikeouts in the ninth.

Barks allowed four hits and two earned runs in 2.0 innings. Zack Minter worked 1.1 innings, surrendering three hits and three runs. ASU relievers Zack Breaux, Curtis Parker and Stephen Ramsey held the Fleet in check over the last 5.2 innings. The trio gave up just three hits and one earned run with no walks and seven strikeouts. The Jags host West Liberty Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
