Augusta State dropped 13-8 to No. 24 Erskine in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon in Due West, S.C.
With the win, the Flying Fleet improved to 21-6 on the season, while the Jaguars
dropped to 8-16.
Augusta State would jump on the Fleet in the top of the first, taking advantage of a two out error to score five runs. The big blow for the Jaguars would be a grand slam from Carl Burrow.
Erskine would make it a 5-2 game in the third inning when Chas Anthony lined a double off the center field wall to score two players. In the bottom of the fourth, Matt Youngblood would tie the game with a two run single.
Zach McCarthy would then put Erskine up by two with a two run homer. Leading 8-5 in the sixth, Erskine’s Bryan Fogle smacked out a grand slam to make it a 12-5 game.
The Jaguars would try to rally in the top of the ninth. After a lead off walk to Matt Smith and an Erskine error, Caleb Saggus would line a triple into the left center gap and then score on a sacrifice fly to make it 13-8. Erskine’s Austin Hefflin would close out the inning and preserve the win.
For the Jags, Chase Johnston was tagged with the loss and dropped to 0-3 overall. Johnston gave up only nine earned runs on twelve hits and had a strikeout in 5.1 innings of work.
Burrow led the Jaguars going 2-4 with a home run and four RBI’s, while Saggus was 2-5 with a triple and two runs driven in.
Anthony led the Fleet going 3-5 with a double and two runs driven in, while Fogle was 2-5 with a home run and four RBI’s. Derek Smith (2-0) picked up the win allowing just two hits in 3.1 innings of relief and striking out six.
ASU hosts Georgia Southwestern over the weekend in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series. The Jags and ‘Canes square off in doubleheader on Saturday, March 20 at 1:00 p.m., and then meet in a single game on Sunday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m.
