HUNTSVILLE,
Ala. --
Augusta State’s cross country squad earned its highest finish ever in NCAA postseason competition Saturday, taking fifth place in the NCAA South Regional Cross Country Championship hosted by Alabama-Huntsville at Sharon Johnston Park.
The Jaguars had three runners – junior Jenafer Forward and seniors Annie Kim and Kristyn Holley – place among the top 32.
ASU tallied a total of 191 points. Forward placed 21st, followed by Kim in 28th and Holley in 32nd. Sophomores Kara Kreutzer and Kaci McCane finished 43rd and 67th, respectively. The Jags have finished ninth and fifth at the South Regional in the last two seasons under fourth-year head coach Adam Ward.
ASU was the highest-finishing squad among the six Peach Belt Conference teams to qualify for the regional. According to Ward, each of the Jaguars posted their personal-best times in the regional.
Tampa had all five of its runners finish in the top 15 to capture the team title with 40 points and earn a bid to the National Championships in Joplin, Mo., on Nov. 17. Also advancing were runnerup Harding and Alabama-Huntsville. Harding finished the race with 55 points, while UAH tallied 79 points.
Janee Jones of Harding was the individual champion, finishing first with a time of 21:17.4. Tampa’s Laura Woznicki took second at 21:19, while Caitlin Heider of Alabama-Huntsville came in third at 21:37.2.
Carolyne Kwambai of Florida Southern and Carolyn Horst of Florida Tech also qualified for the nationals as the top two individuals not affiliated with a qualifying team.
