Season Capsule:

Gordon GibbonsTodd McLaurinThe 2006-07 season has been near-stellar for the Clayton State Lakers. Clayton State got hot out the gates with a 17-game winning streak and a No. 2 ranking nationally in Division II. However, the Lakers stumbled a little down the stretch, dropping six of their final 10 regular season games to finish 10-6 in the Peach Belt Conference and third in the Peach Belt South Division.

In the Peach Belt Conference Tournament at Lander, Clayton State caught some steam. The Lakers rolled to a 63-43 victory over USC-Upstate to advance to the semifinals and a showdown against in-state rival and Peach Belt regular season champion Augusta State. The Top 25 showdown had all the showings of a championship game as Clayton State held on and edged Augusta State 72-69, advancing to the Peach Belt Tournament championship game for the first time in program history. However, host Lander played a near-flawless second half and pulled away from the Lakers 75-61.

Clayton State relies on its stingy defense, which has been ranked in the Top 5 in the nation all season. Senior guard Todd McLaurin, a two-time All-Peach Belt Conference selection, leads Clayton State in scoring, averaging 14 points a game. Senior point guard Brandon Kelley is the offensive catalyst, averaging 13 points and four assists a game, while junior guard Michael Sloan averages 12 points a game and shoots better than 40 percent from 3-point range. Inside, senior forward John Beugnot averages roughly 10 points and eight rebounds a contest.
