AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State head men’s basketball coach Dip Metress announced Tuesday the addition of Alex Smith to the Jaguar men’s basketball program.

A 6-5, 245-pound forward from Greenville, S.C., Smith spent four seasons at William & Mary in the Colonial Athletic Association. As a junior last season, Smith battled through injuries to play in 18 of 30 games for the Tribe and made four starts. He averaged 4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. He shot 49.0 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent from 3-point range.

During his career, he scored a total of 324 points and played in 79 games with 12 starts. He received a medical redshirt after having his junior season (2007-08) curtailed by injury.

Smith, who has one year of eligibility remaining, earned a B.S. degree in Kinesiology this summer from William & Mary. He will be enrolled in ASU’s Master’s Degree program in the College of Education in the Department of Kinesiology & Health Science.

"One of the reasons we have been 81-19 the last three years is because we have had the ability to score on the block and Alex gives us this same type of ability,” Metress said. “At our level, Alex will have an immediate impact and he, along with our other four seniors, will be key pieces toward our success in 2009-10."

The Jags return three starters and nine letterwinners from last season’s 30-5 squad that was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation, made its second straight Elite Eight appearance and advanced to the Final Four for the second consecutive season.
