TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama held off Augusta State’s upset bid Tuesday night, edging the Jaguars 61-55 in an exhibition contest before an announced crowd of 9,047 in Coleman Coliseum.

Senior guard Ben Madgen paced ASU with 16 points and three steals. The senior frontcourt tandem of Fred Brathwaite and Alex Smith booked 12 points each and combined for 13 rebounds. Junior Franck Ndongo netted nine points off the bench. Senior point guard Daniel Dixon drilled a pair of 3-pointers and collected three steals. Brathwaite added three steals and three blocks.

JaMychal Green was the only Alabama player to reach double digits, finishing with 12 points.

ASU shot 38.9 percent in the game and forced 23 Alabama turnovers. The Crimson Tide shot 44 percent for the game and outrebounded the Jags 36-28.

Trailing 27-26 at the half, ASU pulled even at 31-all on a Dixon trey just 2:00 into the second half. Alabama then went on a 14-2 run, leading by as much as 12 at the 12:13 mark of the second half.

A Tony Mitchell dunk put the Crimson Tide 51-40 with 7:36 left before the Jags responded with a 13-4 spurt over the next 5:11. Two Madgen free throws pulled ASU within 55-51 with 2:25 left. After the Jags forced a turnover, Madgen hit a running lefthander in the lane with 34 seconds left to cut the deficit to 55-53.

Bama’s Mikhail Torrance drained a pair of free throws to put the Tide up 57-53. Ndongo canned a running hook in the lane with 10 seconds remaining to pull ASU within 57-55. The Jags were forced to foul and the Tide’s Anthony Brock hit two free throws with :06 left for a 59-55 Alabama lead. Green hit a pair from the charity stripe for the final margin with seconds to go.

ASU shot 37.0 percent in the first half and trailed by just one at the break. Smith and Brathwaite had eight points each and Madgen added seven for the Jags, who led for the first 18:31 of the opening period and outrebounded the Crimson Tide 15-14.

ASU opens its regular-season schedule on Sunday, Nov. 15 when the Jags entertain West Georgia in a nonconference clash at 4:00 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
