AUGUSTA,
Ga. - Augusta State head men’s basketball coach Dip Metress announced Wednesday the first signee of the spring recruiting period.
Oneal Armstrong, a 5-7 point guard from Columbia State Community College in Columbia, Tenn., has signed a national letter-of-intent to play for the Jaguars beginning in the fall of 2010.
The leading scorer in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association during the 2009-10 season, Armstrong averaged 20.5 ppg., while leading the Chargers to a 20-4 overall record, the TCCAA regular-season championship and a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament.
He shot 47.3 percent from 3-point range and was named both the TCCAA’s Western Division Player-Of-The-Year and the TCCAA’s Western Division Defensive Player-Of-The-Year.
“We are ecstatic about signing Oneal,” Metress said. “To his credit, he was his league’s Player-Of-The-Year and Defensive Player-Of-The-Year, which is an unusual combination especially from the point guard position. Oneal is a point guard who can make shots and is a relentless competitor. Good point guards are hard to find but I think we found the perfect fit for our program.”
The Jags return five letterwinners from last season’s 29-4 squad that captured the Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship, reached the Elite Eight for the third consecutive season and was ranked No. 1 in the nation on two separate occasions.
