AUGUSTA, Ga.-- USC Upstate swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Augusta State
Saturday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The Spartans (11-3, 6-2 PBC) used a 9-1 run late in the second half to pull away for a 77-64 victory. The Jaguars closed to within 60-58 on a layup by redshirt freshman Matt Scott with 5:24 remaining. But Upstate responded with baskets on three of its next four possessions while ASU went without a field goal for a span of 4:22. Spartan freshman Daniel Quinlan hit a jumper and a three-pointer and Luke Payne added two free throws during the stretch.
Jaguar senior Dean Brebner hit a three-pointer with 1:02 to play to cut the Upstate lead to 69-62, but the visitors made 10 free throws in the last two minutes to erase any hopes of an ASU rally.
Sophomore forward Tyrekus Bowman led the Jags with 19 points and three blocks. Scott registered 16 points and senior forward Dean Brebner added 11 points. Senior guard Karim Telfer dished out 10 assists.
Luke Payne paced the Spartans with a game-high 21 points, including a 17-of-17 effort from the free-throw line. Ivaca Grgurovic and Daniel Quinlan each posted 17 points.
Upstate shot 51.1 percent from the field, including 52.2 percent in the second half.
The loss dropped ASU to one game under .500 at 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the PBC.
In the women’s contest, USC Upstate jumped out to an early double-digit lead and withstood a second-half rally by Augusta State to take a 61-51 road victory.
The Lady Spartans ripped off a 16-0 run after ASU scored the first basket of the game.
Upstate led by as much as 18 at 22-4 with 10:15 to go in the first half. A 10-0 spurt
got the Lady Jags within eight and they trailed 30-22 entering the half.
Upstate (9-6, 6-2 PBC) pushed its advantage to as much as 16 on a jumper by Lele Miles three minutes into the second half. ASU cut its deficit to seven, only to have the Lady Spartans go back up by 10. ASU then rattled off a 10-2 run over the next 4:40, getting within 47-45 on Lauren DeCoud’s jumper with 7:12 remaining.
Upstate then answered with six straight points and outscored ASU 14-6 in the final 7:12, holding ASU scoreless for a stretch of 3:23 in that span.
Miles tallied a game-high 18 points for the Lady Spartans, while Yakeeshia Ross added 13 and Courtney Bradley chipped in 10.
Junior forward Tamala Turner came off the bench to lead the Lady Jags (6-11, 1-7 PBC) with 14 points, and senior forward Eva Vodrazkova booked her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
ASU hits the road on Monday, Jan. 23, traveling to Armstrong Atlantic State to take on the Pirates in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader. The women’s contest is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m., with the men’s game to follow at 7:30 p.m. The Jags return home to host North Georgia on Wednesday, Jan. 25.
