SAVANNAH, Ga.-- Visiting Augusta State swept a Peach Belt Conference
doubleheader from Armstrong Atlantic State in Peach Belt Conference
basketball action on Monday evening at Alumni Arena. The Jaguar men held
the Pirates to just 32 percent shooting from the floor in stopping the
Pirates' nine-game win streak with a 64-58 win, while the Lady Jaguars
forced 26 turnovers in a 54-47 victory over the Lady Pirates.
The Jaguars (8-8, 4-5 PBC) came out on fire in the first half, hitting 52 percent of
their shots to jump out to a 33-23 halftime lead. AASU (13-3, 7-2 PBC) cut
the lead to one possession on several occasions in the second half, only
to have the Jaguars hit a big basket to pull back away. The last chance
came with 2:16 left when two Bryan Taylor free throws brought the Pirates
to within three, 59-56, but a three-pointer by Matt Scott at the 1:08 mark
pushed the lead back to six, and
the Pirates never threatened afterwards.
Demetrius Howard led four Augusta State players in double figures with 13
points - all in the first half - while Scott added 11 and Tyrekus Bowman
and Dean Brebner each chipped in 10. Kevin Parker's 12 points off the
bench on four-of-five three-pointers led the Pirates.
In the first game, Armstrong Atlantic (8-8, 3-6 PBC) dropped its third straight by shooting just 28.6 percent from the floor against the Lady Jaguars (7-11, 2-7 PBC). Augusta State shot 48 percent from the floor and got 16 points off the bench from Shirrell Ford, who went 7-of-8 from the floor. The Lady Pirates were led by sophomore Kaneetha Gordon's sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Armstrong Atlantic returns to action on Wednesday, January 25, as the Pirates travel to Clayton State for a Peach Belt doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. Augusta State is next in action on Wednesday as well as the Jaguars host North Georgia for a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.
