AUGUSTA, Ga.-- Armstrong Atlantic State swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from
Augusta State Wednesday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The Pirates (15-4, 9-3 PBC) handed ASU a 70-52 setback, avenging a 64-58 loss to the Jaguars just nine days ago in Savannah. In that contest, ASU shot 51.1 percent from the field compared to just 32.2 by AASU. The visitors turned the tables on the Jaguars, shooting 52.9 percent compared to just 35.2 by ASU.
The Jags jumped out to a 4-0 lead on baskets by Matt Scott and Tyrekus Bowman before Armstrong pulled ahead 7-6. ASU scored five straight points to go up 11-7 before the Pirates responded with a 12-0 run, taking a 19-11 advantage on Patrick Sanou’s tip-in with 7:07 left, and never trailed again.
ASU (9-9, 5-6 PBC) got to within 30-26 on the first basket of the second half, but never got any closer. A pair of Jamie Quarles’ free throws cut the Armstrong lead to 44-38 at the 13:06 mark before the visitors countered with 10 of the next 11 points to pull away. A Jamal Galloway three-pointer with 6:32 to play gave the Pirates their largest lead of the night at 63-45.
Galloway came off the bench to post a game-high 14 points for AASU, while Kevin Parker added 12 and Bryan Taylor chipped in 10. Galloway and Parker combined to hit eight three-pointers.
Bowman paced the Jags with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Dean Brebner posted 11.
AASU, which got 41 points from its bench, connected on 11-of-21 treys, a gaudy 52.4 percent.
In the women’s contest, ASU freshman Tracey Paschal scored a game-high and career-high 18 points,
yet it wasn’t enough as Armstrong handed the Lady Jaguars a 65-54 setback. The victory came nine days
after ASU knocked off the Lady Pirates 54-47 in Savannah.
Audosha Kelley registered 15 points to lead AASU, with Kaneetha Gordon providing 12 points and Alicia Durham contributing 11.
No other Lady Jaguar scored in double figures.
The Lady Pirates connected on 24-of-30 free-throws (80.0 percent), compared to just 54.5 percent from ASU (6-of-11).
AASU fell behind 4-0, then scored 15 of the next 20 points to move ahead 15-9. The Lady Pirates (10-9, 5-7 PBC) took their largest lead of the first half on a Tana Griffiths’ free throw at the 11:01 mark. ASU (7-13, 2-9 PBC) got within two on a pair of occasions before AASU took a 34-27 lead into the locker room.
The Lady Pirates pushed their lead to double digits on the first two baskets of the second half. ASU closed to within 45-43 with 7:41 remaining on a Tiffany Paschal jumper before a 9-2 Armstrong run put the game away. A 5-0 Lady Jags’ spurt cut their deficit to 55-50 with 2:14 to play, but AASU finished the contest on a 10-4 run.
ASU travels to Milledgeville, Ga., to take on Georgia College & State on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively. The Jags return home to host rival USC Aiken on Monday, Feb. 6 in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
