AUGUSTA, Ga.-- Augusta State swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader
from USC Aiken Monday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Redshirt freshmen Matt Scott and Garret Siler each enjoyed career nights as the Jaguars rallied late to knock off the Pacers 71-67. Scott scored a career-high 23 points, connecting on five three-pointers, while Siler, making his first career start, matched his career-best effort with 14 points and added six rebounds. Senior guard Karim Telfer dished out eight assists.
Richard Blocker topped the Pacers with 18 points and Kenny Burr and Josh Poston had 11 points each.
USC Aiken (4-16, 2-11 PBC) led for all but 1:40 of the first half and the first 10:04 of the second. A Scott three-pointer tied the game at 56-all with 9:56 to play and Tyrekus Bowman’s tip-in of a Jason Mills’ jumper knotted the game at 58-all with 9:09 to go. Karim Telfer’s layup gave the Jags a 60-58 advantage with 8:19 remaining.
The Pacers answered with a Lukas Varga trey to regain the advantage at 61-60 with 7:56 to play. USCA led for the next 5:28 before a Telfer free throw gave the Jags a 66-65 lead at the 2:28 mark. Dean Brebner’s rainbow three-pointer with the shot clock about to expire put ASU ahead 69-65 with just 1:23 left before Tiago DePaula scored on a layup to cut the Pacer deficit to two with just 21 seconds showing. After a Larry Diamond free throw gave ASU a three-point lead, Blocker worked inside the paint but missed a layup with :05 remaining. Telfer connected on 1-of-2 free throws for the final margin.
The victory pushed ASU back to the .500 mark at 10-10 overall and 6-7 in conference play.
In the women’s contest, Lady Jaguar senior forward Eva Vodrazkova scored 15 points -- one off her season high -- while three other players posted double figures as ASU downed USC Aiken 64-58.
Junior guard Julie Robbins registered a career-high 14 points, and Sonya Jackson and Lauren DeCoud had 12 and 10 points, respectively. Junior forward Shirrell Ford booked a game-high 14 rebounds, one off her season high.
The Lady Jags (8-14, 3-10 PBC) trailed by two at the half but immediately pulled ahead on a Jackson jumper and a free throw from Robbins. The Lady Pacers took a brief 34-32 lead on two Satu Leppanen free throws, but ASU responded with seven straight points and never trailed again. The Lady Jags took their largest lead of the night on a Lauren DeCoud trey with 1:20 to play.
With the loss, USC Aiken dropped to 8-12 overall and 4-9 in the PBC.
ASU hits the road to take on Clayton State on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively. The Jags return to Christenberry Fieldhouse for Homecoming on Saturday, Feb. 13 in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.
