AUGUSTA, Ga.-- Augusta State split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Columbus State
Saturday night on Homecoming in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The ASU men knocked off its second nationally-ranked opponent in as many games, holding off the 25th-ranked Cougars 73-70. The Jaguars were coming off a 66-56 win at No. 20 Clayton State on Wednesday, Feb. 8. CSU was also ranked third in the most recent South Atlantic Region poll.
Redshirt freshman center Garret Siler paced the Jaguars (12-10, 8-7 PBC) with a career-high 17 points and seven rebounds in just 16 minutes of action. Senior guard Karim Telfer had 16 points and fellow senior and backcourt mate Jason Mills added 12.
Ransom Antoine was one of five Cougars to reach double figures. He led CSU with 15 points, followed by Corris Portis with 14, Will Davis and Ron Robinson with 12 each and Justin Wilson chipped in with 11.
The Jags shot 59.3 percent in the first half and led 41-36 at the half. The 41 points in the first half marked a season-high for ASU. The victory pushed the Jags’ winning streak to three games, matching their longest of the season. They made 10 three-pointers in the contest, one off their season high.
In the women’s contest,
Columbus State’s Cherwonna Walker and Shanrika Hardeman each posted double-doubles
as the Lady Cougars recorded a 51-43 victory over ASU.
Walker registered a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Hardeman booked 13 points and 14 boards. The frontcourt duo combined for 17 offensive rebounds on their own. The Lady Cougars outrebounded ASU 56-35, including 25 offensive boards.
Senior forward Eva Vodrazkova was the only Lady Jaguar in double figures, finishing with 12 points and four blocks.
ASU led 22-21 at halftime on a cold-shooting night for both teams. For the game, the Lady Jags shot just 32.7 percent compared to only 26.9 by Columbus State. After ASU pulled to within 32-31 on a Tiffany Paschal layup, Columbus State used a 12-2 run down the stretch of the second half to pull away. Walker’s layup with 3:31 to play gave the Lady Cougars their biggest lead of the night at 44-33 with 3:31 remaining.
ASU hosts UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Feb. 15 in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader. Game time for the women is set for 5:30 p.m., with the men’s contest to follow at 7:30 p.m.
