AUGUSTA, Ga.-- Augusta State swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from UNC Pembroke
Wednesday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Sophomore forward Tyrekus Bowman came off the bench to lead the Jaguars with 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Redshirt freshman center Garret Siler posted 13 points and nine boards and three blocked shots of his own, while senior guard Jason Mills added 11 points.
The victory was the fourth straight for the Jaguars, who moved up to No. 7 in the latest South Atlantic Region poll released earlier in the day.
Jarrell Hunter tallied a game-high 16 points to lead the Braves, who dropped to 4-19 overall and 1-15 in league play. The loss was their 15th straight after they began the season 4-4. Scooter Lawrence chipped in 12 points and five assists.
ASU (13-10, 9-7 PBC) outrebounded the Braves 45-27 and shot 50 percent from the field to just 33.9
percent for UNCP, who played the last 30 minutes without head coach Jason Tinsley, who was ejected
10:26 remaining in
the first half.
In the women’s contest, ASU upset the Lady Braves 50-39 on a cold-shooting night for both squads.
UNCP, which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the most recent South Atlantic Region poll, managed to shoot just 25.5 percent in the game. The Lady Jags didn't fare much better, posting a 34.7 percent shooting effort, but they did outrebound the Lady Braves 47-28.
Freshman forward Tracey Paschal registered a game-high 13 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Jags. Senior forward Eva Vodrazkova had 12 points, including a 10-of-10 effort at the free-throw line.
Tasha Stotler was the only Lady Brave to reach double figures, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds and four steals.
Neither team led by more than four points in a see-saw first half that saw each team lead three times. ASU scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 30-19 lead 3:11 into the second half. UNCP rattled off eight straight points to get within three of the lead before the Lady Jags answered with back-to-back baskets.
The Lady Braves twice pulled to within four on a pair of occasions, the last with 7:50 to play, on a Stotler layup. ASU didn’t make a field goal in the final 7:31 of the game, but went 12-of-14 from the free throw line over that span to prevent a UNCP rally.
ASU travels to Greenwood, S.C. on Saturday, Feb. 18 to take on Lander. Game time is 2:30 p.m. for the women’s contest, with the men’s game scheduled to tip off at 4:30 p.m. The Jags stay on the road on Monday, traveling to USC Aiken, before hosting Francis Marion on Wednesday, Feb. 22 for Senior Night at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
