AIKEN, S.C. -- Augusta State held off a spirited USC Aiken squad to
take a 59-57 road victory Monday in Peach Belt Conference action at The
Courthouse.
The victory was the eighth straight for the Jaguars in the series with USC Aiken.
Redshirt freshman guard Matt Scott paced ASU (14-11, 10-8 PBC) with 20 points, including 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Senior forward Dean Brebner tallied 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
ASU shot 57.9 percent from the field in the first half and led by as much as 25-12 before USCA went on an 8-1 run to pull within five with 5:26 remaining. Kingsley Oguchi's jumper as the clock ran out trimmed the Pacer deficit to 33-29 at the half.
USCA's Josh Poston, who tallied a game-high 21 points, gave the Pacers their first lead of the night at 43-41 on a jumper midway through the second half.
Scott's conversion of a four-point play after being fouled by Poston on a trey sparked the Jags to a 13-3 run before the Pacers responded with an 11-5 spurt of their own, closing to within two of the lead on a Richard Blocker three-pointer with 41 seconds left in the contest.
After a missed free throw by ASU gave the hosts a chance to tie or take the lead, Blocker missed a game-tying attempt and Tiago DaPaula missed on the putback as time expired.
The Jaguars closed out their regular-season home schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in Christenberry Fieldhouse with Senior Night vs. Francis Marion.
Game time for the women's contest is set for 5:30 p.m., with the men's matchup slated to tip off around 7:30 p.m.
