GREENWOOD, S.C -- Senior swingman Alex Carter scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half and All-Conference center
Bryan Taylor scored all of his 10 markers in the final stanza to lead third-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State University to
a 76-69 win over sixth-seeded Augusta State University, Friday afternoon (March 3) in the quarterfinals of the Peach
Belt Conference men’s basketball tournament.
The Pirates (22-6) advance to face second-seed Georgia College & State University in Saturday’s first semifinal game at 6 p.m. AASU has now won its opening game in the tournament each of the past 12 years.
In addition to Carter and Taylor, guard Tony Harris recorded 13 points for Armstrong Atlantic State, and reserve guard Jamaal Galloway chipped in 10 points. Taylor hauled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Senior guard Karim Telfer led ASU with a season-high 22 points as the Jaguars end their season at 15-13. Sophomore forward Tyrekus Bowman added 12 points and 11 rebounds, while forward Dean Brebner tallied 11 points in his final game.
ASU took a 41-33 lead at intermission thanks to a 59.3 percent shooting performance in the opening half. The Jaguars hit 16-of-27 field goal attempts, including six-of-13 from beyond the three-point arc. Augusta State never trailed in the first stanza and once led by 13 points (31-18) following a three-pointer by Telfer with 6:49 left before halftime.
However, ASU cooled off in the final half. The Jaguars missed six of their first seven shots after halftime as AASU claimed a 49-44 advantage. Brebner and Telfer then drained back-to-back three-pointers to vault ASU back into the lead at 50-49 with 11:34 remaining.
With the score knotted at 59-59, the Pirates took the lead for good with a 7-0 spurt. AASU point guard William Kane sealed the win with six free throws in the final 33 seconds.
The Pirates turned the tables on ASU in the second half, shooting 52.2 percent while holding the Jaguars to 28.0 percent.
Game Quotes
Augusta State Head Coach Dip Metress: “They’re a very physical team, and it’s tough for us to combat that. They’re a good team.”
“Their zone botherd us a little more in the second half. They went inside, which is smart. All the credit goes to them. We lost to a better basketball team than us.”
Augusta State’s Karim Telfer: “They played a more physical game, and they wanted it a little bit more. I just felt like I had to do whatever I could. You never want things to end, so you just try to do what you can.”
Armstrong Atlantic State Head Coach Jeff Burkhamer: “This game was everything I thought it would be: hard fought, possession to possession.”
“They shot great in the first half. We changed how we were guarding Telfer in the second half, and that was big. We had some big defensive stops. We did a better job contesting shots.”
Armstrong Atlantic State’s Bryan Taylor: “Their defense had to adjust to our outside shooting, so that opened up the post for me in the second half. We knew they were in foul trouble, so we were gonna try to get inside and get to the free throw line.”
Armstrong Atlantic State’s Alex Carter: “We saw they were doubling our post in the first half, so I knew we had to hit some shots from outside to open things up.”
