AUGUSTA, Ga. --
Augusta State swept a pair of non-conference matchups from cross-town rival Paine College Monday night at Carter Gymnasium.
With the victories, the Lady Jaguars improve to 4-1 and are off to their best since their Elite Eight season of 2003-04. The ASU men moved to 3-0 with three consecutive road wins to start the season. The victory over Paine also avenged ASU’s 62-58 season-opening loss at Paine last November.
Paine visits Christenberry Fieldhouse for a doubleheader on Saturday, Dec. 16, with games slated for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
In the women’s contest, sophomore forward Tracey Paschal reached double figures for the fifth straight game, pacing the Lady Jags with 15 points in a 69-55 victory. Freshman guard/forward Nicole Mealing had 13 points and junior guard Deo Ngulela handed out six assists.
Savoyia Barrett led the Lady Lions (1-2) with 15 points and Kenyell Hutchins added 11.
ASU shot 63 percent in the second half from the field while limiting Paine to just 37.0 percent shooting from the field. ASU also outrebounded the Lady Lions 37-30
Sophomore center Garret Siler booked a career-high 23 points in the Jaguars’ 78-60 victory over the Paine men’s squad. Siler also registered the first double-double of his career, pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds while adding two blocks.
Freshman forward Ben Madgen had a career-high effort as well, turning in 22 points while junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman managed 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal.
Julian English and Brian Harper combined for 36 of Paine’s 60 points. Chris Jackson aided the defensive effort with 10 rebounds and a game-high four blocked shots.
ASU (3-0) outrebounded the Lions (1-1) 52-40 and outscored Paine 40-26 in the second half after taking a four-point lead into halftime.
The Lady Jags return to action on Thursday when they travel to Newberry for a 6 p.m. tipoff. The ASU men’s squad is off until Tuesday, Dec. 5 when it hosts Queens in the home opener at 7:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
