Jags Power Way Past Queens
Augusta State improves to 4-0, off to best start since 1972-73 season

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman tallied a season-high 23 points Tuesday night, leading the Jaguars to a 78-66 non-conference victory over previously undefeated Queens in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The contest marked the season home opener for the Jaguars, who improved to 4-0 with the victory. The 4-0 start is the best for ASU since 1972-73, when the Jags began that season 7-0.

Bowman’s 23 points matched a season-high by a Jaguar, equaling sophomore center Garret Siler’s effort at Paine on Monday, Nov. 27. Freshman forward Ben Madgen had 16 points and Siler added 12 points and five blocks in 24 minutes of action.

Queens forward Chris Jones paced the Royals (5-1) with 20 points and 11 rebounds, eight on the offensive end. John Thompson had 14 off the bench, while Darrell Evans chipped in 11.

ASU (4-0) never trailed, jumping out to an 8-2 lead on a layup from junior guard Jamie Quarles at the 14:40 mark. The Jags built their lead to as much as 22 on a Bowman layup with 4:24 to go before Queens closed out the half on an 8-1 spurt over the final 3:55.

ASU took a 37-22 lead into the locker room and maintained that advantage until consecutive three-pointers from Queens pulled the visitors to within nine. The Royals, who received votes in this week’s NABC Top 25 Poll, got as close as eight before the Jags rattled off a 10-0 spurt to go up 60-42 with 9:50 to play.

The Jags maintained their double-digit lead until Queens scored six straight points in the final minute to pull within 70-64 with 46 seconds remaining. Freshmen guards Daniel Dixon and Kip Small sank four straight free throws and junior guard Demetrius Howard added a pair to push ASU back ahead by 10 and Bowman punctuated the victory with a thunderous dunk as time ran out.

ASU shot 56.6 percent in the game, including 60 percent in the second half, while holding Queens to just 37.3 percent from the field. The Jags forced 25 turnovers and connected on a season-high 17-of-21 free throws.

ASU travels to Durham, N.C., his weekend to participate in the Hilton RTP Classic on the campus of UNC Central. The Jags face UNCC at 7:00 p.m. Friday night, then meet Cheyney at 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

The Jags return home to Christenberry Fieldhouse to host Paine College in doubleheader on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
