DURHAM, N.C. -- Augusta State’s Ben Madgen and Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman combined for 53 points Friday night, but it wasn’t enough as the Jaguars fell 77-76 in overtime to North Carolina Central in the Hilton RTP Classic at McLendon-McDougald Gym on the campus of UNC Central.

Madgen, a freshman guard/forward, poured in a career-high 28 points, including five three pointers – the last with 12 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 66-all and force overtime. A junior forward, Bowman booked a season-high 25 points and connected on the first two three-pointers of his career. He led the Jags with seven rebounds and booked five steals. Sophomore center Garret Siler had 11 points and three rebounds.

ASU, off to a 4-0 start for the first time since the 1972-73 season, dropped to 4-1 with the loss. The Eagles improved to 3-3 with the victory.

Both teams shot over 50 percent for the game, with the Jags coming in at a 51.0 percent clip. ASU set season highs for three-pointers made (nine) and free-throw percentage (.850) in the game. The Jags suffered 25 turnovers, but forced 29 miscues by UNCC. The contest featured 13 ties and 20 lead changes.

Jason Hervey led four Eagles in double figures with 25 points. Chris Mayshack added 16 off the bench, including five three-pointers.

ASU takes on Cheyney Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in McClendon-McDougald Gym before returning home for final exams.
