DURHAM, N.C. -- Augusta State junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman scored a career-high 33 points and sparked a late comeback Saturday vs. Cheyney in the Hilton RTP Classic, but it wasn’t enough as the Jaguars fell 81-77 in McClendon-McDougald Gym on the campus of UNC Central.

Freshman guard/forward Ben Madgen had 18 points and sophomore center Garret Siler booked his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 17 rebounds. The overtime loss was the second in as many days for ASU, which fell to 4-2.

The Jags needed a frantic rally in the final minute to force overtime. ASU trailed by 11 points with 52 seconds to play before Madgen connected on a three-pointer to pull the Jags within 66-58 with 47 seconds remaining. After an ASU timeout and a Cheyney turnover, junior guard Jamie Quarles hit a jumper to cut the Jags’ deficit to six at 66-60 with 42 seconds remaining.

Cheyney’s Ed Braswell missed two free throws before a Bowman dunk pulled ASU within 66-62 with 12 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Bowman got a steal and nailed a three-pointer to get the Jags within one with 10 seconds to go in regulation. After an ASU foul, Cheyney’s Ogie Bravo hit the first free throw but missed the second. Freshman guard Kip Small got the rebound, but his layup attempt missed and Bowman’s putback was off the mark. Bowman gathered in his own miss and layed it in at the buzzer to knot the game at 67-all and force the extra period.

The Wolves (2-4) jumped out to a five-point lead in overtime before ASU rallied again. A three-point play by Bowman at the 1:27 mark and a dunk by Siler 20 seconds later tied the game at 77-all. But the Jags didn’t score the rest of the way, with Cheyney hitting four free throws for the final margin.

Braswell led Cheyney with 31 points, including six three-pointers, and Dominique Curry had 10 for the Wolves.

The Jaguars break for final exams before hosting Paine on Saturday, Dec. 16 in a doubleheader beginning with the women’s game at 5:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The men’s contest is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
