AUGUSTA, Ga. --
Augusta State junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman was named the Peach Belt Conference’s Player-of-the-Week, according to an announcement Monday afternoon from the league office.
Bowman enjoyed an explosive week for the Jaguars, leading the squad in scoring in all three games as ASU posted a 1-2 record. Despite a pair of overtime losses during the weekend, Bowman excelled. He began the week with a 23-point, six-round effort in a 78-66 victory over Queens on Tuesday, Dec. 5 in the Jags’ home opener.
Against North Carolina Central in the Hilton RTP Classic on Friday, Dec. 8, Bowman tallied 25 points, six rebounds and five steals and hit the first two three-pointers of his collegiate career in a 77-76 overtime loss. He then followed that effort by pouring in 33 points and collecting nine rebounds in an 81-77 overtime loss to Cheyney on Saturday, Dec. 9.
For the week, Bowman shot 61 percent from the field (31-of-51) and 73 percent from the free-throw line. He currently leads the PBC in scoring at 23.2 ppg., ranks fourth in the league in blocked shots (1.8 bpg.) and fifth in rebounding (7.3 rpg.).
He has scored in double figures in each of ASU’s first six games and led the Jags in scoring on four occasions.
The Jags return to action Saturday when they host Paine College in a doubleheader beginning with the women’s contest at 5:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The men’s matchup is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
