Augusta State pulled off a season sweep of Paine College Saturday evening in a pair of non-conference basketball matchups at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

AUGUSTA, Ga. --
Augusta State pulled off a season sweep of Paine College Saturday evening in a pair of non-conference basketball matchups at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The Lady Jaguars had a balanced scoring attack, placing five players in double figures in a 70-54 victory over the Lady Lions. With the win, ASU improved to 7-2 on the season while Paine fell to 3-4.
Senior forward Shirrell Ford and junior point guard Deo Ngulela had 12 points each to pace the Lady Jags to their third straight win. Freshman reserve guard Jasmine Godwin chipped in 11 points and freshmen Brittany Jarrard and Nicole Mealing each added 10 points. Ngulela dished out a game-high nine assists.
The Lady Jags held Paine to just 33.9 percent shooting from the field and outscored the Lady Lions 32-18 in the paint.
ASU jumped out to a 20-8 lead and led by as many as 17 after a pair of Ford free throws with at the 10:19 mark of the first half. Paine outscored the Lady Jags 16-7 the rest of the way to to cut their deficit to 34-26 at the
half. The Lady Jags went ahead by 12 on a Ngulela layup with 14:31 to play in the game and maintained a double-digit lead up until Savoyia Barrett’s three-pointer at the 9:00 mark pulled the Lady Lions within 52-43. ASU answered with consecutive baskets from sophomore forward Tracey Paschal and was never threatened the rest of the way, leading by as much as 18 on three occasions.
In the men’s matchup, ASU junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman matched his season scoring average with a game-high 23 points and added 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season as the Jags registered an 87-59 victory. Sophomore center Garret Siler posted 12 points, 11 boards and four blocks for his third double-double of the season while freshman forward Ben Madgen tallied 15 points . Reserve point guard Kip Small had a career-high 12 points and fellow freshman point guard Daniel Dixon, in his first collegiate start, dished out a game-high six assists.
ASU, off to its best start under third-year head coach Dip Metress at 5-2, set season highs for points scored (87) and margin of victory (28). The victory was was the Jags’ third straight over Paine and their fourth in the last five games of the series.
The Jags jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a Bowman jumper and three-pointer and a Siler dunk and never trailed. ASU led 10-1 less than three minues into the game and took as much as a 14-point advantage on two occasions, the last on a Madgen three-pointer with 9:40 to go in the first half. Paine responded with a 15-6 run, cutting its deficit to five twice, the second on a pair of Daniel Lomax free throws with 1:03 to go, and trailed 39-32 at the half.
Paine (3-2) got as close as four in the second half, closing to within 52-48 on a Chris Jackson free throw at th 12:50 mark. A Madgen trey sparked a 16-0 spurt over the next 5:42 as the Jags opened up a 20-point lead at 68-48 and held Paine scoreless over a span of 6:54. After a Earlando Hudson basket broke Paine’s drought, ASU outscored the Lions 19-9 in the final 5:56.
The Jags turn right around and host Carson-Newman Sunday afternoon in Christenberry Fieldhouse at 4:00 p.m.
