AUGUSTA, Ga. --
Augusta State matched its season high in scoring for the second game in a row Sunday afternoon with an 87-67 non-conference victory over Carson-Newman in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The victory improved the Jaguars to 6-2 overall and gave them the season sweep over the Eagles, who fell to 6-4. ASU opened the season with a 73-58 win at Carson-Newman on Nov. 18.
Sophomore center Garret Siler registered a game-high 17 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots for his fourth double-double of the season and third in a row. Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman and Ben Madgen each booked 16 points and sophomore guard Steve Smith enjoyed his best outing as a Jaguar, tallying a career-high 15 points, including four three-pointers. Freshman reserve guard Kip Small led the squad with six assists.
Darren Williams paced Carson-Newman with 12 points while Andy Tipton and Kente Hart added 11 each.
Coming off an 87-59 win over Paine less than 24 hours earlier, the Jags fell behind early before taking their first lead on a Madgen three-pointer nearly five minutes into the contest. After a layup by the Eagles’ Hart, ASU scored on three straight possessions to take a 14-10 lead at the 13:19 mark. After C-N pulled even on a Tipton trey with 9:50 to play, the Jags fashioned a 13-2 run to go ahead 29-18 with 4:18 remaining.
The Eagles closed to within five before ASU ended the half on a 9-2 run, the last three coming on a buzzer-beating trey by Smith near halfcourt.
ASU then began the second half on a 12-0 run that included three consective treys from Smith and freshman guard Daniel Dixon to open up a 23-point lead on the Eagles. The Jags led by as many as 28 after Smith’s fourth trey of the game with 15:44 to play. C-N tried to mount a comeback, using a 13-0 spurt to get within 13 at the 7:47 mark before Dixon answered with a three-pointer to stem the Eagle charge. ASU’s lead never fell below 16 the rest of the way.
The Jags set a season-high with 11 three-pointers and had a season-low eight turnovers. Only three of the eight miscues came from the starting lineup.
ASU returns to action on Wed., Dec. 20, traveling to Charlotte, N.C., to take on Queens at 7:30 p.m. The Jags defeated the Royals 78-66 on Dec. 5 in Christenberry Fieldhouse in ASU’s home opener.
