Augusta State junior forward earns second Peach Belt honor of the season

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State’s Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman was named the Peach Belt Conference’s Player-of-the-Week, according to an announcement Monday afternoon from the league office.

The award is the second this season for Bowman, a 6-5, 185-pound junior forward from Tignall, Ga. He joins Columbus State junior forward Alton Hart as the only two-time winners of the award.

Bowman enjoyed another outstanding week for the Jaguars, leading the squad to a pair of victories as ASU opened its Peach Belt Conference schedule with wins over Columbus State and USC Aiken. He scored 29 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds -- 11 on the offensive end -- in an 81-75 win over Columbus State on Thurs., Jan. 4. He added five assists, two steals and two blocks. He then followed with a 17-point, eight-rebound effort in a 89-70 win at USC Aiken on Sat., Jan. 6.

Bowman continues to lead the league in scoring at 21.5 ppg. and is also ranked 28th nationally in scoring. He ranks eighth in the PBC in rebounding and joins Hart as the only two players in the PBC to be ranked in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding.

The Jags, off to their best since the 2000-01 season at 10-3 overall and 2-0 in league play, travel to Milledgeville, Ga., on Wed., Jan. 10 to take on Georgia College & State. The women’s contest tips off the PBC doubleheader at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s matchup at 7:30 p.m.
