AUGUSTA, Ga. --
Augusta State swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Georgia College & State Wednesday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Junior point guard Deo Ngulela recorded the first triple-double in the 33-year history of the Lady Jaguar program, booking 20 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds and four steals in 33 minutes to spark ASU to an 87-59 victory. Senior guard Alla Batovska and freshman guard Brittany Jarrard each added 11 points, and junior forward Tracey Paschal chipped in 10.
Cassie Miliner led the Lady Bobcats with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Ashley Williams had 12 points.
The victory lifted ASU to 11-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play while GCSU fell to 13-5 and 4-3 in the league.
The Lady Jags jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the first 5:54 of the contest and a 7-2 spurt over the final 1:48 of the half gave them a 43-26 lead at the half. ASU shot 51.6 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes to just 28.6 by GCSU.
The Lady Bobcats pulled within 14 twice early on in the second half, the second time on a Lindsey Smith layup at the 16:36 mark. ASU answered with eight straight points to take a 22-point lead on a Jasmine Godwin basket and the Lady Jag advantage never dipped below 18 the rest of the way.
The Lady Jags, who outscored GCSU 42-20 in the paint, got 33 points from their bench and tallied their largest margin of victory (28) in a PBC game.
In the men’s contest, ASU junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Jaguars notched their most lopsided win of the season with a 76-45 victory over the Bearcats.
Sophomore center Garret Siler was the only other Jaguar to reach double figures, finishing with 14 points before fouling out. Bowman, who also blocked three shots, posted his third double-double of the year while sophomore guard Steve Smith dished out a game-high six assists.
Shaun Keaton led GCSU (13-5, 3-4 PBC) with 11 points and Aaron Clark managed 10 and seven boards.
The victory was the seventh straight for the Jags (15-3, 7-0 PBC) and helped them match the 1977-78 season for the second-best start in school history. The win also gave ASU a season sweep of the Bobcats, who swept ASU a season ago.
GCSU’s 45 points marked the fewest allowed by the Jags all season and also were the fewest scored by the Bobcats in 2006-07. GCSU’s 21 second-half points were the fewest allowed all season by the Jags as well.
ASU led just 33-24 at the break but shot 57.6 percent in the second half and outscored the visitors 43-21 in the final 20 minutes. Ten different players scored for the Jags, who outrebounded the Bobcats 46-24. A 17-2 spurt to start the second half put ASU ahead 50-26 at the 12:32 mark. The Bobcats got within 64-42 with 3:55 remaining before the Jaguar reserves scored 12 of the last 15 points for the final margin.
GCSU hosts USC Upstate on Sat., Jan. 27 at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. while ASU travels to Florence, S.C., to take on Francis Marion beginning with the women’s contest at 5:30 p.m.
