AUGUSTA, Ga. --
Augusta State swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Armstrong Atlantic State Wednesday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Freshman reserve guard Brittany Jarrard connected on a career-high six three pointers and enjoyed her best night as a collegian, scoring 20 points to lead the Lady Jaguars to a 67-64 overtime victory. Senior forward Shirrell Ford booked her second double-double of 2006-07 with a season-high 19 points and 12 rebounds as ASU posted its fourth straight win and its fifth victory in the last six games.
Tana Griffiths paced AASU with 18 points, including five three-pointers. Kaneetha Gordon posted 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds and Jasmine Herron added 11 points.
With the win, ASU improved to 13-6 overall and 5-4 in the PBC. The Lady Pirates dropped to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in the league.
Armstrong rallied from six points down in the final 2:33 of regulation, with Herron nailing a pair of free throws to tie the game at 60 and force the extra frame.
Senior guard Alla Batovska hit a runner to put the Lady Jags ahead 62-60 2:23 into overtime. After Ameshia Bryant hit one of two free throws for AASU, sophomore forward Tracey Paschal’s bucket put ASU ahead by three and a Ford three throw gave the Lady Jags a 65-61 edge. Nicole Hornage’s trey pulled the Lady Pirates to within one at 65-64 with :39 remaining. After the teams traded possessions, Ford hit a pair of free throws with a second left for the final margin of victory.
In the men’s contest, 21st-ranked Augusta State shot a blistering 72 percent in the second half, outscoring the Pirates 48-24 en route to a 77-53 victory.
The win is the ninth straight for the Jags, the longest winning streak since they won 12 straight during the 1977-78 season. The victory lifted ASU to 17-3 overall and 9-0 in the PBC, marking the best-ever start by the Jags in conference play since joining the league for the 1991-92 season.
Junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman -- the PBC’s reigning Player-of-the-Week and leading scorer -- paced the Jags with 21 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks, booking his third straight double-double and team-leading fifth of the season. Freshman Ben Madgen knocked in 15 points and five assists, while Steve Smith chipped in 12 points and Garret Siler registered 11 points, six blocked shots and five boards.
Senior All-American center Bryan Taylor led the Pirates (14-6, 5-4 in the PBC) with 14 points and Patrick Sanou and Darly Massamba managed 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Taylor’s layup off an inbounds pass from Jamaal Galloway with .9 seconds remaining in the first half sent the teams to the locker rooms tied at 29. ASU freshman point guard Daniel Dixon hit a three-pointer just 21 seconds into the second half and the Jags never trailed again. A 10-1 run in a span of 4:41 gave ASU a double-digit lead. A Kip Small trey gave the Jags their largest lead of the night, a 27-point cushion, with 1:41 to play.
ASU, which matched its season low with only eight turnovers, hit 18-of-25 shots in the second half while limiting AASU to just 8-of-30 (26.7 percent)
The Jags host Lander on Sat., Feb. 3 at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. in a PBC doubleheader in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
