Augusta State swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Clayton State Wednesday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The sweep is the fifth straight at home for the ASU men’s and women’s squads since Jan. 13.
Junior point guard Deo Ngulela tallied a game-high 18 points, seven assists and four steals as the Lady Jaguars won the their sixth straight game with an 84-79 victory over the Lakers. Freshman guard Jasmine Godwin had a career-high 17 points off the bench for ASU (15-6, 7-4), which also got 14 points from fellow freshman reserve guard Brittany Jarrard and 12 points from sophomore center Sherika Parker.
Nikkisha Pritchett booked a team-high 16 points off the bench for the Lakers (18-4, 8-3 PBC), who entered the contest as the top-ranked team in the latest South Atlantic Region poll. Crystal Brown posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, Marie St. Fort chipped in 11 points and Shantel Ragin had 10 points and 10 boards.
ASU sprinted out to a 22-9 lead midway through the first half and led by 20 at the break. A 10-0 Laker run over a span of 2:50 early in the second half got CSU within eight at the 14:13 mark. The visitors got as close as three on two occasions, the last with 6:09 remaining on a Pritchett jumper. The Lady Jags answered with consecutive baskets and the Lakers never got closer than four the rest of the way.
The 16th-ranked ASU men’s squad stretched its winning streak to 11 straight and extended its best-ever start in PBC play, improving to 11-0 with a 76-67 victory over the 10th-ranked Lakers. The matchup was the first-ever in Christenberry to feature a pair of nationally-ranked opponents.
The win was the 13th straight win at home for the Jags and improved them to 7-1 vs. nationally-ranked opponents under third-year head coach Dip Metress.
The victory moved ASU to 19-3 overall and 11-0 in the PBC, good for a three-game lead over the Lakers for first place in the South Division with five games remaining in the regular season.
The Jags, who earlier in the day vaulted over Clayton State and into the No. 1 spot in the South Atlantic Region poll, got a game-high 27 points from junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman. Garret Siler registered his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Ben Madgen had 11 points. Kip Small turned in seven points, six rebounds and five assists and Bowman and Siler notched three blocked shots each, with Bowman adding three steals.
Todd McLaurin paced CSU (19-3, 8-3 PBC) with 23 points and Brandon Kelly managed 11.
The Jags shot 55.8 percent for the game, including 59.3 percent in the second half, and limited the Lakers to just 38.2 percent from the field.
ASU led by as much as 10 in the first half before CSU closed the half on a 9-4 run to get within four at the break. The Jags pushed their advantage to 12 on three occasions in the second half before a 12-3 run capped by a McLaurin jumper pulled Clayton to within three at 60-57. After a timeout, ASU responded with a Madgen jumper and Bowman trey and a Steve Smith three put the Jags ahead 70-61 with 4:00 left. The Lakers got as close as four on a McClaurin three with 2:40 to play, but Small hit four free throws and Bowman added a layup in the final 2:27 for the final margin.
ASU travels to Americus, Ga., on Sat., Feb. 10 to take on PBC newcomer Georgia Southwestern in a league doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
