Jags Snag PBC Road Sweep
ASU women win seventh straight, 16th-ranked Jags match longest winning streak since 1977-78 season

AMERICUS, Ga. -- Augusta State swept a road doubleheader from Peach Belt Conference-newcomer Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon.

Behind four double-figure scorers, the Lady Jaguars won 80-67 and pushed their winning streak to seven in a row. The victory lifted ASU to 16-6 overall and 8-4 in the PBC.

Sophomore forward Tracey Paschal paced the Lady Jags with 13 points while sophomore center Sherika Parker had 11. Senior guard Alla Batovska and freshman guard Jasmine Godwin each chipped in 10 points. Senior forward Shirrell Ford grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

ASU outscored GSW 38-25 after the teams went into the half deadlocked at 42-all. The Lady Jags got 30 points from its bench and owned a 24-7 edge in second-chance points.

The 16th-ranked ASU men’s squad won its eighth straight road game and remained unblemished in conference play with an 85-76 victory over the Hurricanes.

ASU improved to 20-3 overall and 12-0 in league play, extending its best-ever start in PBC play and matching the 1977-78 edition of the Jags for the second-longest winning streak in school history. The 1969-70 Jags own the all-time school record for consecutive wins with 18.

The 20-win season is the first for the men’s basketball program since the 2001-02 squad posted a 22-8 record.

Junior forward AJ Bowman led four Jags in double figures with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Junior guard Demetrius Howard had 12 points while sophomore guard Steve Smith and freshman guard Daniel Dixon registered 11 points each.

Dixon snagged a career-high six rebounds and freshman guard Kip Small dished out five assists to go with nine points. Junior forwards Etsho Ilunga (eight) and Luke Tambon (six) combined for 14 points and seven rebounds.

ASU shot 67.9 percent in the opening half en route to a 49-33 lead at halftime and received a season-high 37 points from its bench. The Jags’ 62.5 percent shooting for the game marked the second-highest of the season.

ASU travels to Columbus, Ga., on Wednesday, Feb. 14 for a pair of PBC South-Division clashes with Columbus State at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
