AUGUSTA, Ga. --
The Augusta State men’s basketball team will make its 2006-07 debut on Wednesday when the Jaguars take on George Washington in an exhibition contest at 7:30 p.m. in the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center in Washington, D.C.
The contest can be heard live on the internet at www.gwradio.com.
Augusta State posted a 15-13 record last season, including an 11-9 record in Peach Belt Conference play. ASU faced the Colonials in an exhibition prior to last season, falling 103-96 in the Smith Athletic Center in a contest in which ASU led by as many as 16 points in the first half.
ASU welcomes back two starters -- juniors Tyrekus Bowman and Demetrius Howard -- and six lettermen from last season’s squad. Six newcomers will also be looking to make an impact in their first game in a Jaguars’ jersey.
The Colonials are coming off the best year in school history, becoming just the fourth team in the 30-year history of the Atlantic 10 to go undefeated in the league. After posting a 26-1 regular-season record that included 18 straight victories, GW won its NCAA Tournament first-round game in the Atlanta Region over UNC Wilmington prior to losing to overall No. 1 seed Duke in the second round. The Colonials were picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic 10 preseason coaches poll.
ASU travels to Charlottesville, Va., to meet Virginia in an exhibition matchup on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m., before officially opening the 2006-07 regular season at Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn., on Nov. 18.
