Colonials hold off Augusta State, 81-72

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- George Washington edged Augusta State 81-72 Wednesday night in an exhibition matchup at the Smith Center.

Junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman paced ASU with 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting and added four rebounds and three steals. Fellow junior Demetrius Howard booked 15 points and four rebounds. Freshman guard Daniel Dixon had nine points and four assists to go along with a team-high eight rebounds and sophomore guard Steve Smith dished out a team-high five assists.

ASU, which outscored GW 40-34 in the second half, shot 37.3 percent from the field and suffered 23 turnovers. The Jags shot 33.3 percent from three-point range (6-of-18) and shot 71.0 percent (22-of-31) at the free throw line. All 13 players saw playing time for the Jags, including five freshmen.

The Colonials, coming off their best season in school history, had five players in double figures, led by Maureece Rice with 15 points.

ASU meets Virginia in its second and final exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va., in the Cavaliers’ brand new John Paul Jones Arena. The game is open to the public with no admission charge.
