AUGUSTA, Ga. --
The honors continued to roll in for Augusta State’s Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman Wednesday when the Jaguars’ leading scorer was named to the Daktronics All-South Atlantic Region first team.
A 6-5, 185-pound junior forward from Tignall, Ga., Bowman led the Peach Belt Conference in scoring during the regular season at 20.4 ppg. He also ranked in the top 10 in seven statistical categories en route to being named the PBC Player-of-the-Year. By being named to the first team, he is now eligible for All-America consideration.
Bowman helped lead ASU to the second-winningest season in school history and the program’s first PBC regular-season title since the 1998-99 season. The Jags climbed as high as No. 8 in the national rankings during a 14-game winning streak and earned their first-ever No. 1 seed in this weekend’s NCAA Tournament South Atlantic Regional.
Bowman was the only PBC player named to the squad, while the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) led the way with six selections, including three on the first team. Bowie State’s Gill Goodrich was voted as the Daktronics Division II South Atlantic Player-of-the-Year. He was joined on the first team by Wingate’s Sean Barnette, St. Augustine’s Antonio Fitzgerald and Elizabeth City State’s Anthony Hilliard.
The second team All-South Atlantic Region team consisted of Virginia State’s Avis Wyatt, Virginia Union’s Brad Byerson, Bowie State’s Tyronne Beale, Catawba’s Brian Graves and Wingate’s Justin Baker.
Goodrich, a 5-foot-10 senior guard from Baltimore, Md., was a two-time All-CIAA selection and the 2007 CIAA Player-of-the-Year. He led the nation in scoring, averaging 27 points a game and also paced the CIAA in four categories: scoring, assists, steals and free throw percentage. Goodrich is one of three conference Players-of-the-Year on the first team. In addition to Goodrich, Barnette was the South Atlantic Conference Player-of-the-Year.
