ASU men's basketball bolsters interior with addition of 6-10 center

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State men’s basketball head coach Dip Metress announced Wednesday the addition of Jason Killeen to the men’s basketball program.

A 6-10, 240-pound center, Killen averaged 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds last season for a Winthrop squad that won 29 games and advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. A native of Limerick, Ireland, Killeen spent three years in the Eagles’ program. As a sophomore in 2006-07, he saw action in 15 games, including seven Big South contests. He shot 52.2 percent from the field and averaged 6.7 minutes per game.

“Jason will be a great addition to our program,” Metress said. “He has been associated the last three years with one of the best programs in the country and we feel he can have an immediate impact on our program. At our level, Jason’s ability to rebound will impact both ends of the floor. We felt that we needed to add some more size to our program and we look forward to him helping us defend our Peach Belt Title.”

Killeen, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, will become the first Irish product to suit up for the Jaguars since Brian Clernon played for ASU from 1993-97 under former Jaguar head coach and current Director of Athletics Clint Bryant.

While at Winthrop, Killen was part of an Eagle program that captured three consecutive Big South Conference championships and made three trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles became the first team in Big South men’s basketball history to complete the regular season undefeated (14-0) record and win a first round NCAA tournament game.

ASU is coming off the second winningest season in the history of the men’s basketball program. The Jags posted a 24-8 record and climbed as high as No. 8 in the nation en route to winning the Peach Belt Conference regular season championship and earning the top seed in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional.

The Jaguars return all five starters and 10 lettermen, including Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman, a 6-5 forward who earned All-America honors as a junior and was named the Georgia Player Of The Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club as well as the Peach Belt Conference Player Of The Year.
