CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia downed Augusta State 78-63 Saturday night in an exhibition matchup at John Paul Jones Arena. The contest was the first-ever event held in the Cavaliers’ new state-of-the-art facility.

Freshman guard Daniel Dixon come off the bench to lead the Jaguars with 16 points. He was 5-of-7 from the field, including 4-of-4 from three-point range, and 2-2 at the free throw line. He added two assists and two steals. Junior forward Tyrekus Bowman tallied 14 points and a team-high four rebounds and recorded three blocks.

Paced by reserve Adrian Joseph’s 17 points, Virginia had four players reach double figures. The Cavaliers outrebounded ASU 53-30, while the Jags forced the Wahoos into 24 turnovers. ASU was 14-of-16 from the charity stripe (87.5 percent).

The Jags shot just 25 percent in the first half and trailed 43-22 at the break, but outscored UVA 41-35 in the second half and limited the hosts to just 31.3 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes.

All 13 players logged floor time for the Jags, who will return to practice for two weeks before officially opening the 2006-07 season on the road at Carson-Newman on Saturday, Nov. 18 in Jefferson City, Tenn., at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
