Bowman Sparks ASU, 73-58
Junior forward paces Jags with game-high 22 points at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn -- Augusta State junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman tallied a game-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half, as the Jaguars caught fire after halftime and opened the 2006-07 with a 73-58 road victory Saturday night over Carson-Newman at Holt Fieldhouse.

ASU trailed by four at the half – 28-24 – and shot just 32.1 percent in the opening 20 minutes. But behind Bowman’s effort, the Jags shot 62.1 percent in the second half and hit six three-pointers while outscoring the Eagles 49-30.

Junior guard Demetrius Howard scored 19 points and hit 5-of-6 three-point attempts to go along with six assists. Freshman forward Ben Madgen just missed a double-double in his collegiate debut, posting 18 points and nine rebounds to go along with four assists. Sophomore center Garret Siler had eight points, six boards and five blocks, while Bowman notched three blocks of his own. Sophomore guard Steve Smith, also making his first appearance in a Jaguar uniform, dished out eight assists.

“We showed great resilience in the second half defensively and were able to hit some big shots,” said ASU head coach Dip Metress. “We got in some foul trouble in the first half and that slowed us down in what we were trying to accomplish offensively. We made a few adjustments in the second half and got AJ going. Dee Howard shot the ball awfully well tonight and Steve Smith did a good job running the team. We will take a road win any time we can get it and get ready for Benedict on Tuesday.”

Kente Hart and Andy Tipton each had 15 points to lead Carson-Newman, which dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

ASU returns to action Tuesday when the Jaguars travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on Benedict at 7:30 p.m.
