COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Augusta State picked up a 70-64 non-conference road win over Benedict Tuesday night in the B.E. Mayes HRC.

With the victory -- the Jaguars’ second straight on the road to start the season -- ASU improved to 2-0, while Benedict fell to 1-1.

Junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman led the Jags in scoring for the second straight game with 22 points and missed a double-double by a single rebound, collecting nine boards. Sophomore center Garret Siler tallied 14 points and three blocks and freshman guard Daniel Dixon chipped in with 12 points on four three-pointers and added four assists and three steals. Fellow freshman guard Kip Small had a team-high five assists.

ASU shot 52.2 percent from the field and was even better from long-range, connecting on 7-of-11 three-point attempts (63.6 percent). ASU went 15-of-19 at the foul line (78.9 percent).

The Jags limited Benedict to 39.3 percent shooting, including 30.0 percent in the first half, when ASU built as much as an 18-point lead. The Jags also outrebounded BC 31-24.

“We did a great job of coming out early and staying focused in a real hostile environment,” said ASU head coach Dip Metress. “We had a big lead in the first half but we knew they’d make a run. They chipped away and got back in the game in the second half but we maintained our poise and executed when we had to. This is a terrific team win. Starting the season 2-0 on the road is huge for us. It gives us a lot of confidence that we can carry over into the rest of our non-conference schedule.”

Zachary Baron booked game-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers and Lamont Robinson registered 19 points.

The Jags return to action Monday, traveling across town to take on Paine College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning with the women’s contest at 5:30 p.m. in Carter Gymnasium. The men’s game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
