AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State senior Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman enjoyed his best performance of the season Saturday night as the fifth-ranked Jaguars downed Georgia College & State 74-54 in a Peach Belt Conference matchup in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The victory improved ASU to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Jags bounced back from Wednesday’s loss at USC Aiken by holding GCSU to its fewest points of the season. The Bobcats (4-1, 1-1 in the PBC) entered the contest averaging a league-high 94.2 ppg., but were held to a season-low 54 after combining for 221 in their previous two outings.

Bowman connected on 8-of-12 shots from the field and scored a team-high 21 points, his season-high through the first five games. Sophomore Ben Madgen had 15 points and point guard Daniel Dixon added 13 points and seven assists. Junior center Garret Siler pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and recorded three blocked shots.

GCSU junior guard Shaun Keaton managed a game-high 23 points, but was the only Bobcat to reach double figures. Senior all-conference center Aaron Clark grabbed 10 rebounds but was held to just seven points.

ASU shot 58.3 percent for the game, including 65.0 in the second half, and limited the visitors to just 31.7 percent shooting.

The lead changed hands five times in the early going before the Jags put together a 12-2 spurt and went up 29-16 on a Demetrius Howard 3-pointer with 4:22 to go in the first half.

ASU’s advantage never dipped below nine until Graham Martin nailed a trey with 5:38 left in the game that pulled the Bobcats to within 58-50. The Jags answered with six straight points – four by Bowman – and were never seriously threatened the rest of the way.

The Jags take on Georgia in a non-conference matchup on Monday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Athens. ASU is 0-3 all-time against the Bulldogs, with UGA claiming the last meeting 100-84 during the 1988-89 season.
