Augusta State senior Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman enjoyed his best performance of the season Thursday night as the 14th-ranked Jaguars cruised past Paine 83-47 in a non-conference matchup at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
ASU, playing for the first time in 10 days, improved to 5-2 overall and picked up its fourth straight win in the series and its fifth in the last six meetings. The Lions, who entered the contest averaging 80 points per game, dropped to 2-4 with the loss.
The Jaguars led from the outset, opening the game on a 12-0 run over the first 2:32 behind a pair of 3-pointers and dunks from Bowman and Garret Siler. The Lions didn’t score until Donald Harris hit a pair of free throws nearly four minutes in and didn’t connect on a field goal until Marcus McDaniel’s layup at the 14:57 mark.
Paine got within seven on three occasions before ASU rattled off another 12-0 run, capped by Demetrius Howard’s trey that put the Jags ahead 28-9 with 8:56 remaining in the first half. The Jags were up 44-19 at the break and led by as much as 40 on an Etsho Ilunga tip-in with 2:47 to play.
ASU sophomore guard/forward Ben Madgen had 12 points and three assists, while Siler registered 10 points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots. Freshman point guard Tom Wright notched a career-best 10 points off the bench.
Harris paced Paine with 12 points and 10 boards off the bench and Joshua Adams added 11.
ASU shot 51.7 percent for the game and tallied 22 assists, compared to just 28.8 percent by the Lions.
The Jags hit the road on Friday, traveling to Richmond, Va., to take on Virginia Union in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers will enter the contest ranked No. 22 in the nation.
