RICHMOND, Va. -- Senior forward Tyrekus Bowman’s tip-in with 0.7 seconds remaining lifted No. 14 Augusta State to a 76- 74 non-conference victory over 22nd-ranked Virginia Union Saturday night in front of a crowd of 1,418 at Barco-Stevens Hall.

With the score tied at 74-all and 10 seconds left in the game, Virginia Union’s length of the floor pass was intercepted by ASU junior guard Steve Smith. After the Jaguars called timeout with five seconds to play, sophomore point guard Daniel Dixon drove the length of the floor and his driving layup was tipped in by Bowman for the game-winning basket.

Sophomore guard/forward Ben Madgen paced ASU with a career-high 29 points, connecting on 10-of-14 shots, including 4- of-6 3-point attempts. Bowman booked 20 points and seven rebounds for his 28th consecutive double-digit scoring effort -- dating back to last season – while senior guard Demetrius Howard posted 14 points, six rebounds and three steals off the bench. Dixon added seven rebounds and six assists.

The victory lifted ASU to a 6-2 overall record and improved the Jags to 9-3 vs. nationally-ranked opponents under fourthyear head coach Dip Metress. The win also marked the 198th victory in Metress’ 12th season as a head coach overall.

Brandon Byerson notched 20 points for Virginia Union (4-2), with Brad Byerson and Branden Smith adding 15 and 12 points, respectively.

ASU won despite being outshot and outrebounded by Virginia Union. The Jags connected on 10 treys, including eight from Madgen and Howard.

ASU will take a two-week break for the holidays before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 29 at the University of Tampa.
