AUGUSTA,
Ga. --
Augusta State’s Ben Madgen was named the Peach Belt Conference Player-of-the-Week Monday afternoon, according to an announcement from the league office.
A 6-4, 185-pound sophomore guard/forward from Williamstown, Australia, Madgen helped lead the 14th-ranked Jaguars to a 2-1 record over the last two weeks. He paced the Jaguars with 21 points in an 81-74 loss at Georgia on Monday, Dec. 3, then added 12 points in only 18 minutes vs. Paine as ASU returned from a 10-day layoff with an 83-47 victory over the Lions on Thursday, Dec. 13.
Madgen then poured in a career-high 29 points as the Jags edged No. 22 Virginia Union 76-74 on the road on Saturday, Dec. 15. He connected on 10-of-14 field-goal attempts, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range against the Panthers.
In the three-game stretch, Madgen averaged 20.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game while shooting 55.3 percent (21-of-38) from the field and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from 3-point range. With the trifecta of double-digit scoring efforts, he raised his streak of consecutive double-figure scoring games to 10, dating back to last season.
The victory over Virginia Union helped ASU improve to 9-3 vs. nationally-ranked opponents under head coach Dip Metress, including 2-0 this season vs. nationally-ranked foes.
ASU (6-2) returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 29 when the Jags travel to the Sunshine State to take on the University of Tampa at 4:00 p.m.
