MORROW, Ga. -- Augusta State senior All-American Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman nailed two free throws with nine seconds remaining Saturday night to lift the No. 16 Jaguars to a wild 67-65 victory over Clayton State in the Athletic & Fitness Center.

ASU sophomore Ben Madgen tallied a game-high 21 points in a hard-fought contest that featured five ties and seven lead changes, including four lead changes in the final 1:37. Trailing 61-60, ASU junior Garret Siler canned two free throws with 1:20 to play to put ASU ahead by one.

Clayton’s Michael Sloan scored 20 seconds later to give the Lakers a 63-62 advantage with exactly 1:00 left. Madgen then drilled a 3-pointer on a feed from Daniel Dixon to put ASU back on top 65-63 with 42 seconds left.

CSU responded on its next possession with a basket by Brian Kelly to knot the game at 65-all. After a pair of Clayton timeouts, Kelly fouled Bowman with nine seconds left, sending the Jags’ leading scorer to the charity stripe. He connected on both attempts and came up with a steal on the Lakers’ last possession to seal the victory.

The win marked the fourth straight for the Jags and improved them to 17-4 overall and 12-2 in the PBC. The loss dropped CSU to 10-11 and 6-8, respectively.

Siler added 17 points and seven rebounds, and Bowman posted 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Steve Smith handed out five assists and grabbed five rebounds off the bench.

Tracy Williams led the Lakers with 17 points and five assists while Sloan notched 16 points.

ASU shot just 38.8 percent from the field but made 23-of-31 free throws, including 18-of-23 in the second half.

The Jags take on Lander on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at Finis Horne Arena in Greenwood, S.C.
