Jaguars Extend Winning Streak, 82-68
Bowman, Madgen pace 12th-ranked ASU past Pirates

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State shot 61.5 percent from the field in the first half Saturday night and went on to claim an 82-68 Peach Belt Conference victory over Armstrong Atlantic State on Homecoming in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The victory was the sixth straight for the 12th-ranked Jaguars, who improved to 19-4 overall and 14-2 in the PBC and matched their conference record from last season. The Pirates, who entered the contest on a four-game winning streak of their own, fell to 15-8 and 9-7 in the league.

Senior Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman scored a game-high 21 points and sophomore guard/forward Ben Madgen tallied 20 points and seven assists. Senior guard Demetrius Howard and junior center Garret Siler booked 13 points each. Siler and Bowman pulled down eight rebounds each and Siler blocked five shots. Junior point guard Steve Smith dished out a career-high nine assists.

With his 21 points, Bowman moved into sixth place on the Peach Belt’s career scoring list with 1,593 points, surpassing former Armstrong guard Robert Campbell (1,587). Bowman also scored 20 or more points for the 11th time this season and fashioned his highest scoring output since tallying 27 vs. North Georgia on Jan. 28.

Corey Johnson paced the Pirates with 15 points and Jamaal Galloway managed 13 off the bench. Franchot Brown recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The contest featured six lead changes over the first 4:27 of the game before a three-point play from Bowman moved ASU out in front 11-9. A Siler dunk sandwiched between a pair of Madgen treys put the Jags up by eight. They led by as much as 13 on two occasions, the last on a Bowman jumper with a 1:54 left in the first half.

Madgen nailed his third 3-pointer of the night just 1:11 in the second half and the Pirates never got closer than seven the rest of the way. After a basket by Johnson cut AASU’s deficit to 63-56 at the 9:21 mark, the Jags reeled off eight straight points that Bowman capped with a three-point play. ASU led by as much as 18 following a Madgen free throw with 1:33 to go before AASU hit four free throws in the final minute.

The Jags take on Francis Marion on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
