AUGUSTA,
Ga. --
Augusta State will play host to its second straight South Atlantic Regional on March 15, 16 and 18, according to an announcement late Sunday night from the NCAA national headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Jaguars (22-6) learned of their postseason fate during a selection show gathering at the Jaguar Student Activities Center on ASU’s Walton Way campus.
The Peach Belt Conference regular-season runnerup, ASU will be the regional’s No. 2 seed and take on seventh-seeded Johnson C. Smith on Saturday in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The tournament will make the Jags’ second straight NCAA Tournament appearance and fourth trip to the Big Dance in the past eight seasons.
Game times for the four quarterfinal-round games will be determined during an NCAA conference call on Monday, March 10.
Peach Belt Conference rival and PBC regular-season champion USC Aiken earned the No. 1 seed and will face No. 8 Clayton State in a rematch of Sunday’s PBC Tournament championship game, a contest the Lakers prevailed in 89-87 in triple overtime in the USCA Convocation Center.
ASU will take on a familiar foe in the seventh-seeded Golden Bulls (21-9). The Jags hammered JCSU 93-70 on Nov. 24, 2007 in Christenberry Fieldhouse when ASU jumped out to a 48-18 halftime lead and cruised to victory in its home opener.
No. 3 Wingate will square off with No. 6 Catawba, while No. 4 Virginia Union and No. 5 Lenoir-Rhyne will meet in the other quarterfinal-round matchup. Wingate captured the 2007 NCAA South Atlantic Regional as the No. 5 seed in Christenberry Fieldhouse, defeating Virginia Union to advance to the Elite Eight.
Tickets to the 2008 NCAA South Atlantic Regional are $10 and will go on sale on Tuesday, March 11.
