Jaguar Duo Wins, Advances
ASU's Reed, Newman register 2-and-1 victories in U.S. Amateur

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash.-- Augusta State’s Carter Newman and Patrick Reed each posted 2-and-1 victories Wednesday in the first round of match play at the 112th U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay.

Newman, who earned a spot in the round of 64 after advancing through a 16 players-for-6 spots playoff early Wednesday morning, fell behind Florida’s Andres Echavarria right off the bat. He dropped the first hole to the Colombian before squaring the match with an eagle at the par-4 fifth hole. He then grabbed a 1-up lead with a birdie on the par-5, 607-yard eighth hole and never trailed again.

Newman won the 12th hole for a 2-up lead before Echavarria countered with a win on the 13th to cut his deficit to 1-down. Three holes later, Newman won the 16th with a par for a 2-up lead and sealed the match when both players made birdie on the par-3 17th.

Reed never trailed against Daniel Zuluaga of Columbia, winning three of the first four holes. He owned a 3-up lead after the sixth hole before Zuluaga won two straight to cut his deficit to 1-down. Reed answered by winning the ninth hole before Zuluaga claimed the 10th and 11th to square the match.

After halving three straight holes, Reed birdied the 15th and 16th for a 2-up lead and closed out the match on the 17th with a par.

Thursday’s Round of 32 gets underway at 7:30 a.m., PDT, with Reed facing Illinois’ Scott Langley in the fourth match of the day at 8:00 a.m. (11:00 a.m. EDT). A first-team, All-American, Langley was medalist at the NCAA Championships in June.

Newman follows Reed out 10 minutes later when he meets Max Homa of Valencia, Calif., at 8:10 a.m., PDT
