Near Misses For Taylor, Wilson
Jaguar duo posts runnerup finishes, Coble ousts Hogeboom

ASUAUGUSTA, Ga. -- Matt Kuchar outlasted Vaughn Taylor Monday morning in a six-hole playoff at the PGA Tour’s Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, N.Y. The victory was the second for Kuchar on Tour and his first since the Honda Classic in 2002.

A two-time PGA Tour winner, Taylor fired a six-under 66 Sunday in the final round and held the clubhouse lead until Kuchar, playing in the last group, got up-and-down from a greenside bunker for par on the par-5 18th to match Taylor’s 17-under 271 and force a playoff.

Both players birdied the first playoff hole -- the 18th -- before matching pars on the par-5 12th hole. The playoff was then suspended due to darkness at Atunyote Golf Club in upstate New York.

Turning Stone is the first tournament of the Tour’s Fall Series, which is comprised of five events. Players are vying to finish the year in the top 125 on the money list to retain full exemption for 2010, and the 33-year-old Taylor was right on the cusp at No. 131 with $519,282. He more than doubled his total with his runner-up check of $648,000, putting him over $1 million in earnings for the sixth straight year.

“I was trying to keep the (PGA) card this Fall Series, and I think I locked it up,” Taylor said. “So, you know, one goal accomplished. That was just a good battle. I felt like I had a chance to win a couple times -- maybe next week.”

At the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Fife, Scotland, former three-time ASU All-American Oliver Wilson fired a seven-under 65 Monday at St. Andrews Old Course to vault into a runnerup finish on the European Tour.

Wilson, who partnered with NFL Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen during the pro-am portion of the tourney, began the final round in a tie for 14th place. He opened with a three-under 69 Thursday at Carnoustie, then followed up his five-under 67 on Friday at St. Andrews with a two-under 70 at Kingsbarns on Sunday. Play was abandoned Saturday due to strong winds in excess of 50 mph.

Wallace Booth made the cut in his maiden European Tour appearance as a professional. He posted an even-par 72 Monday and finished 66th to earn 7,133 euros, or the U.S. equivalent of $10,466.77

Booth, who wrapped up his amateur career by competing for Great Britain and Ireland three weeks ago in the 43rd Walker Cup Matches, shot 72 at St. Andrews Thursday and 65 Friday at Kingsbarns before a three-over 75 at Carnoustie Sunday left him tied for 58th.
