ASU sophomore claims playoff victory at Ocean Forest Golf Club

ASUSEA ISLAND, Ga. -- Augusta State’s Patrick Reed parred the first playoff hole Sunday afternoon to capture the Jones Cup Invitational at Ocean Forest Golf Club.

A sophomore from Augusta, Reed parred the last six holes in regulation to earn a spot in the playoff. Victor Dubuisson of Mougins, France, held a three-shot lead with five holes to play but bogeyed three of his last four holes.

Reed then won the first playoff hole with a par to defeat Dubuisson, the fifth-ranked amateur in the Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking, Reed, ranked No. 55 in the same ranking as of Jan. 28, carded a final-round, two-over 74 and finished with a 54- hole total of six-over 222 (72-76-74) on the windy, 7,321-yard, par-72 layout.

Auburn sophomore Blayne Barber took third place at seven-over 223 (73-74-76). Reigning U.S. Amateur Champion Byeong-Hun An finished alone in fourth.

Reed was one of three Jaguars in the field. Juniors Henrik Norlander tied for 12th at 12-over 228 (72-80-76) and Mitch Krywulycz tied for 75th at 33-over 249 (83-79-87).

First contested in 2001, the Jones Cup is a biennial event hosted by Ocean Forest, a Rees Jones design. The course, which opened in 1995, has hosted the 1998 Georgia State Amateur Championship, the 1999 Southern Amateur Championship and the 2001 Walker Cup Match that former Jaguar All-American Jamie Elson competed in and helped lead Great Britain & Ireland to a victory in.
