OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- Augusta State began its 2009-10 season Friday by posting an 18-over 298 in the first round of the Olympia Fields/Fightin Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club.

Sophomore Taylor Floyd paced the Jaguars with an even-par 70 and is part of a five-way tie for fifth place. Senior Jake Amos and sophomores Carter Newman and Henrik Norlander each booked a six-over 76, good for a tie for 43rd. Junior Mitch Krywulycz signed for an 80 and is tied for 68th.

The venue for the tournament, hosted by the University of Illinois, is located just outside of Chicago at Olympia Fields Country Club’s North Course, a 7,157-yard, par-70 layout. Olympia Fields hosted the 2003 U.S. Open, won by Jim Furyk.

The Jaguars, in their eighth season under head coach Josh Gregory, are in 12th place and 12 shots off the pace set by Northwestern. Florida State is second, eight strokes clear of the Jags, while only six shots separate third through 12th place.

Northwestern’s Eric Chun, Seath Lauer of Florida State and Scott Pinckney of Arizona State are tied for the lead after two-under 68’s. Purdue’s Erich Johnston is alone in fourth place following a one-under 69.

The Jags will be paired with Oklahoma State and Stanford for Saturday’s second round. Krywulycz will lead ASU out on the course at 9:00 a.m. (EST), followed by Amos at 9:08, Newman at 9:16, Norlander at 9:24 and Floyd at 9:32.

ASU, ranked No. 8 in the nation in Golfweek’s preseason poll and No. 26 by GolfWorld, is facing one of the top fields of any tournament in the country. Seven of the top 10 and 12 of the top 30 teams, according to Golfweek, along with 14 of the top 30 individuals in the country, are in the field.
