Coastal Carolina Claims Title
USC Aiken senior Scott Brown fires final-round 68, captures medalist honors

EVANS, Ga. -- Coastal Carolina posted a final round of one-over 289 Sunday to claim a five-shot victory in the 2006 Administaff Augusta State Invitational presented by McCalla Raymer, LLC, at Champions Retreat Golf Club.

USC Aiken Scott Brown fired a four-under 68 to earn medalist honors by a single stroke over Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson. Birdies on the par-four 16th and par-three 17th gave Brown a three-shot lead in the clubhouse and proved to be the difference. Johnson stood at one-over on his round after back-to-back bogeys on the 10th and 11th, then rallied with birdies on four of his last seven holes for a three-under 69.

“This is the biggest win of my collegiate career,” said Brown, a two-time All-American from North Augusta, S.C. “Today showed the importance of the short game. Sometimes you’ve just got to get the ball in the hole. I made some good putts and got a lot of shots in the fairway. To win this kind of tournament, you’ve got to get some breaks along the way. This weekend they just went my way.”

The 24th-ranked Chanticleers, who picked up their second win of the season and third straight top-two finish, bested runnerup USC Aiken by five shots. The Pacers tallied the low round of the day, a four-under 284, and were the only team to break par in the final round on the par-72, 7,142-yard layout. Clemson, Minnesota and No. 5 UCLA, the highest-ranked team in the field, rounded out the top five. Host Augusta State, which began the day in seventh place, improved one spot to finish sixth, four shots back of the Bruins.

“This is a special group,” said fifth-year Chanticleer head coach Allen Terrell. “They work hard and prepare hard. We played pretty well all March and so far in the month of April. We had great bounce backs all week. We made some doubles and triples (bogeys), but so did everybody else on such a demanding course.”

UCLA’s Erik Flores, Coastal’s Joachim Fourquet and North Carolina State’s Stephen Lewton tied for third at three-under 213. UCLA’s Daniel Im took sixth alone at two-under 214 and six players tied for seventh at one-under 215, including USC Aiken’s Dane Burkhart.

Sophomore Jamie Miller booked a final-round of two-under 70 to pace the Jaguars with a tie for seventh at one-under 215. Fellow sophomore Mike Keast just missed a top-20 finish, tying for 22nd at two-over 218 after a final round of one-over 73. Juniors Wallace Booth and Major Manning tied for 33rd at five-over 221 and sophomore Keith Guest finished a shot back at six-over 222 and in a tie for 37th.

ASU sophomore Roger Furrer closed with a two-over 74 and led four Jaguars playing as individuals with a tie for 58th at 10-over 226. Sophomore Mark Poulsen tied for 73rd, freshman Janne Kaske tied for 75th and redshirt freshman Matt Dale was 81st.
