Michael McGrath Michael McGrath is in his eighth year as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Augusta State University.

A native of Charleston, S.C., McGrath earned his undergraduate degree in Sports Management from Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C., in 1995.

While at Belmont Abbey, McGrath played in the number one and number two singles positions, as well as the number one doubles slot. McGrath was a four-year letterwinner in tennis under the direction of head coach Mike Reidy at Belmont Abbey.

With McGrath at the helm, the Augusta State men’s and women’s tennis teams have shown dramatic improvement. In 2001, McGrath led the men’s and women’s teams to the NCAA Tournament. The Men finished with an 11-12 overall record (1-7 in the peach belt conference), while the Lady Jags finished at 16-9, 5-5 in the PBC.

The Lady Jags have enjoyed winning seasons in five of the last six years, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2004. They posted one of their winningest seasons in school history, going 15-9 and earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament where they took on second-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State.

The men’s program has made five postseason appearances, including three times in the last six years under McGrath’s leadership. In 2005, the Jags made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in four years when they posted a 13-9 regular-season mark. Senior Raul Intriago was ranked as high as 29th in the nation, while the doubles tandem of Intriago and sophomore Victor Meza was rated the No. 12 doubles team in the country.
