MISENHEIMER, N.C.-- After having their Wednesday dual matches with Wingate cancelled due to rain, the Augusta State men’s and women’s tennis teams both defeated Pfeiffer University on the road on Thursday afternoon.

The men (5-2) swept the singles contests and took two of three doubles matches to claim an 8-1 victory. The singles top seed went to Lindy Blount, who defeated Mangal Sriram in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. The win was the fourth-straight singles win for Blount in the top position.

Victor Meza took the second position, 6-2, 6-0, Igor Vasconcellos won the third, 6-2, 6-7 (10-5), and Harry Hahn claimed the fourth, 6-1, 6-2. Arthur Figueiro extended his winning streak to three with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the fourth position, and Frederico Mendes won the sixth spot, 6-4, 6-0.

On the doubles court, the Jaguars blanked the Falcons in the top two seeds. The team of Hahn and Mendes defeated Sriram and Teo Wiyanto 8-0 in the first position, and Blount and Figueiro beat out A.J. Flores and Zach Shandor in the second position, 8-0.

Pfeiffer prevented a Jaguar sweep in the final doubles position, where Chad Jones and T.J. Maurer defeated Meza and Vasconcellos in a close 9-7 match.

For the women, ASU (5-2) swept the doubles competition and took three of four on the singles court to bring home a 6-3 win.

Each doubles match went to the Jags by a 8-5 margin, with Nathalia Rodrigues and Norma Rovira defeating Leslie Watts and Andrea Stroup in the first seed, Sarah Jegat and Maria Zevallos beating Juliana Reyes and Mia Bobrowski in the second and Ashley Abrams and Jeaneen Brester defeating Samantha Thomas and Heather Smith in the third.

In singles action, Rodrigues took the top spot over Watts after Watts retired after the first set. Also claiming wins for ASU were Rovira in the third position (6-0, 6-2) and Brester in the sixth position (6-3 [8-6]).

Both teams will be back on their home court on Monday, Feb. 27 when they take on Georgia College and State at 2:00 p.m. Last Wednesday’s match with Wingate has been rescheduled for March 12 at 1:00 p.m. in Wingate, N.C.
