SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Augusta State men’s and women’s tennis teams both lost their third-straight Peach Belt Conference match to USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C., on Wednesday afternoon.

The ASU men (5-4) only claimed two singles matches and one doubles match to fall to the Spartans 6-3.

Arthur Figueiro was one of the Jaguars in the win column, taking the singles fourth seed over Sebastian Gonzales 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. The win was the seventh straight for Figueiro, who is 8-1 for the spring season in the fourth and fifth positions.

The other wins for the Jags came in the singles sixth position (Mike Vandenabeele def. Chris Clifton, 6-0, 6-0) and the doubles third position (Lindy Blount/Figueiro def. Grocio Pardo/Chris Clifton, 8-3).

The loss was the second in a row for the Jags, and the third PBC loss of the spring season.

In the women’s match, the team of Nathalia Rodrigues and Norma Rovira picked up the first spring win for the ASU women (5-4) in the PBC, defeating Daniela Lovera and Susana Hernandez 9-8 (7) in the doubles top seed.

Despite taking top honors on the doubles court, the Jags fell to the Spartans 8-1, leaving ASU winless in the PBC in dual matches in 2006.

The Jags will be back in action on Thursday, March 2 when they challenge Limestone in Gaffney, S.C. at 2:00 p.m.
