CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- The Augusta State men’s and women’s tennis teams opened up their spring season with a pair of wins in dual matches against Queens University in Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The men, who are currently ranked 26th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and sixth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, claimed a decisive 8-1 victory, and the women won 5-4 over the Royals.

In men’s singles action, the Jags won all six matches, with Lindy Blount scoring a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vivek Yadav for the top spot, and Victor Meza winning in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, against Ankit Mody in the second position. Also scoring wins for ASU were Igor Vasconcellos (6-0, 6-2), Arthur Figueiro (6-1, 6-3), Frederico Mendes (6-0, 6-3) and Mike Vandenabeele (6-0, 6-2).

On the doubles court, the team of Blount and Harald Hahn suffered a 8-5 loss to Yadav and Mody in the first position. However, this would be the only victory for the Royals, with Igor Vasconcellos and Arthur Figueiro winning 9-7, and Meza and Frederico Mendes winning 8-2 for ASU.

In the women’s singles contest, the Jags won four matches to the Royals two, with newcomer Nathalia Rodrigues taking the top spot 6-2, 7-5 over Merissa Rock. Also claiming victories were Norma Rovira (6-4, 4-6, 6-3), Ashley Abrams (6-1, 6-1) and Jeaneen Brester (6-2, 3-6, 6-2).

In doubles, Queens took the top two spots, with Rock and Skye Powell defeating Rodrigues and Rovira 8-4, and Jessica Burke and Lindsey King defeating Sarah Jegat and Maria Zevallos 8-2. But Abrams and Brester dominated the number three spot, winning 8-0 against Lee-Deane Elmore and Kristen McCulley.

The Jags will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4 when they host Armstrong Atlantic at Newman Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
